To Trust or to Think

People supported by AI-powered decision support tools frequently overrely on the AI: they accept an AI's suggestion even when that is wrong. Adding explanations to AI decisions does not appear reduce overreliance and some studies suggest it might increase it. Informed dual-process theory of cognition, we posit people rarely engage analytically with each individual recommendation explanation, instead develop general heuristics about whether follow suggestions. Building prior research medical decision-making, designed three cognitive forcing interventions compel more thoughtfully AI-generated explanations. We conducted experiment (N=199), in which compared our designs two simple explainable approaches a no-AI baseline. The results demonstrate significantly reduced approaches. However, there was trade-off: assigned least favorable subjective ratings most. To audit work for intervention-generated inequalities, investigated benefited equally different levels Need Cognition (i.e., motivation effortful mental activities). Our show that, average, participants higher more. suggests human moderates effectiveness solutions.
